Iowa Family PAC and Danny Carroll: Marriage Defenders

In all of the buzz surrounding the GOP state convention, I almost forgot to promote my new favorite PAC.  The Friday night before convention I attended the Iowa Family PAC fundraiser at Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse in Wes Des Moines.  The leader of this PAC is Chuck Hurley who is also the president of the Iowa Family Policy Center.  This PAC provides support for Iowa Family Issues by locating pro-family candidates to back during the election cycle.  So if you are a pro-family voter and are not quite sure who you can donate your money to who will further your cause, donate to the Iowa Family PAC because their job is to locate these candidates and financially support them.

One of the candidates from this election cycle that this PAC highlighted is Danny Carroll who is going after the seat in the Iowa House in district 75 (Grinnell area).  Now if you have been living under a rock or just politically asleep these past few years, let me explain who Danny Carroll is.  In 2006 Mr. Carroll was looking to win his 7th term in this district but was defeated in an upset by newcomer Democrat Eric Palmer.  However, this just wasn’t any ordinary defeat because Danny was one of the targets of software mogul and biggest gay donor, Tim Gill, from Colorado.

Why was Carroll targeted?  Because he was a rising pro-family star who had guided a state marriage amendment to passage in the Iowa House (the first step to putting it on the ballot).  It was put into motion to ban gay marriage and Tim Gill made sure that Danny and other politicians like him were stopped.  Gill focused on states with a threat to gay marriage, were close to tipping to a Democratic legislature, and a candidate in a swing district.  Danny Carroll met the criteria.

Tim Gill played it smart and had gay activists from all over the country donating in small or medium sums to Eric Palmer’s campaign.  Small donations would not raise red flags to anyone as being part of a gay agenda.  Danny Carroll didn’t even know why he lost until an Atlantic Monthly reporter pointed him to all the out of state checks.  Danny is now fighting to take his seat back.

Should we be angered at or jealous of Tim Gill?  Don’t we wish that supporters of the pro-family agenda were so motivated?  Were so willing to give of their money, resources, and power?  At the fundraiser it was pointed out that 94% of the gay population voted in the last election compared to 44% of Christians.  This is pathetic, people.  We have values and convictions and we need to fight for those.  Think of what could be done for pro-family candidates if we could turn out 94% of that voting block.  And never underestimate what a small donation here and there can do for a candidate.  And please don’t think that helping a candidate pass out literature or make phone calls isn’t making a difference, because it is–more than you know.

So support Danny Carroll and other pro-family candidates.  Don’t know who those are?  Visit The Iowa Brigade site to get started or have the Iowa Family PAC do the leg-work for you.  The pro-family future of Iowa and the nation starts with the 2008 election.

  1. Thanks for giving the details on how Tim Gill and members of the homosexual community poured money into Iowa in the 2006 election to defeat pro-life, pro-traditional marriage Iowa Representative Danny Carroll. (I am trying to recall if I had heard or read that they might have help defeat some other conservative candidates? Am not certain?)

Also, thanks for pointing how the work of Chuck Hurley and others at the Iowa Family Policy Center and the Iowa Family Policy Action (political arm). I do not know Chuck personally but have supported Iowa Family Policy Center for several years with an annual gift and I mailed a special gift to the Iowa Family Policy Political Action Committee this summer.

The homosexual movement has many dedicated activists. The Iowa Family Policy Center and the Iowa Family Policy Center Action provide pro-life, pro-family people a good organization to work with and through.

  2. Danny Carroll was the only target from Iowa, but there were more in other states. Tim Gill’s mission was very successful.

  3. I have heard of this situation but never really knew the details. Thanks for the info. We need to fight back and show how important pro-family issues are to Iowa’s future.

  4. Now that social issues will be on the front burner again, we need to show support for those candidates who have these convictions.

  5. I had also learned some about this through my State Rep. but I didn’t understand the “players” and appreciate reading more. It was an idea to make it only possible to financially support only those candidates you are eligible to vote for.

  6. It seems somehow underhanded that money from an out of state special interest group or an out of state individual with a personal agenda can be sent to state and local candidates.

The long term effect of this could be to blur the distinctions among the states, could it not?

Ultimately the voters decide an election but we all know what a big part the “almighty dollar” plays as well….With this scenario it is not far-fetched that a state like Iowa could end up with officials who better represent San Francisco.

I don’t know what the laws are surrounding these out of state contributions, but they ought to be changed.

  7. GRRRRR! The outside interference must stop.
Just as we don’t need people bused in from cities to protest at Postville, we do no need outside people with money and influence deciding who our elected officials will be.

This must be of utmost concern with our time and efforts.

  8. “Neighhay” and “callmecrusader” are absolutely correct. The unethical influence on campaigns by people who are not residents of the political district must be made illegal. We ask Danny Carroll to become a “poster child” for a legislative effort to correct this kind of travesty.

  9. i need danny to contact me! i am the founder of ONE IOWA NEVER! We believe mariage is between a man and a woman! aii gay unions should be annulled! this was the biggest disgrace in iowa history to put such a perverted sexualy deviant into such unions! this needs fixed!

    • Good luck with that George. Your number will be up soon, just as the days of all bigots are numbered. I look forward to the day we can finally walk out of our homes with pride, knowing that discrimination in all its forms is a thing of the past, as those who dare practice it are marginalized into obscurity and die off.

That day is coming George. And nothing… nothing… is going to stop it.
